Description
The formal installation of John M. McCardell Jr. as 16th vice-chancellor and president of the University of the South will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 12, during the annual Founders’ Day Convocation in All Saints’ Chapel, beginning at 12:30 p.m. The convocation is the centerpiece of a series of events in October celebrating McCardell’s installation and will include the convocation address by McCardell; the awarding of honorary degrees to the Most Rev. John Sentamu, archbishop of York, and Emory Thomas, Regents Professor of History emeritus at the University of Georgia and the father of John Thomas, headmaster of St. Andrews’ Sewanee School; and the conferral of gowns on new members of the Order of Gownsman, the University’s society recognizing outstanding academic achievement. A highlight of the convocation will be the procession of delegates representing colleges and universities from around the country and the world With the theme “Cornerstone for Tomorrow,” the installation events include academic, cultural and social opportunities for the University and broader communities. These include the commemoration (150 years to the day) of the laying of the original cornerstone, which will take place on Louisiana Circle, site of the original University cornerstone, on Sunday, Oct. 10, at 10 a.m. Attendees will then process to All Saints’ Chapel for the 11 a.m. Holy Eucharist service. The week’s formal events conclude with the dedication of Snowden Hall on Wednesday, Oct. 13, at noon. Snowden Hall has served as the home of the forestry and geology departments since 1962, and an extensive renovation and expansion was completed in time for the 2010–11 academic year For information and the calendar of events visit (click on the venue name for a map with route description)
